베테랑 서울 시민이자 따로 사진을 배운 적이 없는 사진가 임효진은 2017년부터 어제까지 서울 거리를 쏘다니며 일기(저널) 쓰듯 거리에서 마음에 끌리는 것을 사진으로 찍었다. 그중 일부를 이 책 『서울 저널』에 모았다. 그의 사진은 서울의 차갑지만 웃긴, 와글대지만 황량한 정경에서 나오는 헛웃음 같다. 시니컬하기도, 또는 건축이 아니지만 건축적이기도 한 임효진의 사진을 유희적으로 편집하기 시작했지만, 이상하게 낭만적으로 흘러갔다. 카메라로 찍은 ‘이미지’, 휴대폰으로 찍은 ‘이미지’, ‘이미지’를 찍은 ‘이미지’, ‘이미지와’ 실재를 찍은 ‘이미지’, ’이미지’를 찍는 사람을 찍은 ‘이미지’, 벽에 붙은 ‘이미지’, 또 언젠가 임효진 작가가 말한대로 인스타그램에서 ‘휘발되는’ ‘이미지’들이 모두 뒤섞여, 이 책 안에서 주변에서 본 것 같으면서도 본 것 같지 않은 비현실적인 서울의 ‘이미지’가 되었다. 가끔 지방에 출장도 갔기 때문에 지방 사진도 몇 장 끼어 있다. 작가가 찍은 사진 중 사진관, 그리고 그 안에 놓인 대형 사진에 좌우 대칭으로 놓인 개업, 승진 등 축하 난이 사진집 디자인에 영감을 주었다.
